Virgin Atlantic, one of the commercial airliners that banned the use of notebook computers on its flight due to fire hazards, has updated the ban to allow only the models that are outside of the serial numbers that companies have already recalled. Flight attendants will request you to show them the serial number of the battery before approving its use.

The earlier reaction to ban all notebooks was sort of unaligned with mass user interest, but I’m sure safety in midair is everyone’s priority. There are no second chances once you fall from 30,000 feet.

Thankfully, however, Virgin Atlantic has come up with a more rational way to prevent disaster.

Quantas and Korean Air have still not made any changes to their notebook restrictions.

Hopefully, battery makers won’t mess up again and permanently cause airlines to ban notebooks. Can you imagine boringly sitting through an entire flight with a notebook to work on? I know, torture.
