laciesafe.PNGLaCie has added a desktop version to its SAFE line of biometric disk drives, which currently includes notebook drives as one of the security flavors.

The biometric fingerprint scanner can store up to 10 fingerprints and can allow up to five individuals to access the drive. You can also limit access to certain parts of the drive depending upon the user. It’s sort of like the user and administrator differentiator in Windows XP.

Interestingly enough, the drive also has a chain lock fitting for you to physically keep the drive chained to the PC (you must have some very critical data for you to do that). Unfortunately, the company doesn’t provide a chain in the package. Writing that statement almost made me laugh.

The drive is available in 160GB, 320GB and 500GB and will cost $179, $219 and $369, respectively.
