svod_disks_001.PNGHitachi Maxell has developed a new disc technology, which allows companies to boost per-volume capacity by using a film-type disc medium with 92?m thickness. The prototype disc has a 12cm diameter, similar to standard DVDs, and includes two 92?m disc media that are bonded with each other. The two sides yield 9.4GB of capacity in total.

With the new technology, Hitachi Maxell has managed to manufacture 100 discs (totaling 940GB) in a new cartridge.

Hitachi plans to commercialize the process as early as next year for approximately $3.53 per disc, or $352.98 for the 100 disc cartridge. Unfortunately, the company’s plan is to target the commercial market, but the Chief Engineer said it’s possible that this product will be provided to mainstream consumers as well.
